Port Ellen bottled by Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice 24 year old 1982, $199.99
This week the WineSpecialist.com is featuring Port Ellen bottled by Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice 24 year old 1982 as the Single Malt of the Week!
Gordon & MacPhail has made a policy of buying malts from distilleries that are closed in bulk, maturing and bottling them and saving them from extinction. The reasons for the closures are varied, but it would be a great pity if the malt whiskies produced by these distilleries were lost forever. Each one has its own unique and distinctive characteristics, which could never be recreated by another distillery.
Port Ellen is one of the three main villages on Islay and one of the two ferry terminals on the island. The distillery was expanded in the 1960s and temporarily closed in 1983. Port Ellen is now closed permanently and demolished.
Color is pale gold in the glass. Undiluted, the nose is peaty and medicinal, cereal notes and a citrus fruit aroma. On the palate: ashy with birch and salty driftwood flavors, spicy. With water, on the nose is medicinal (slightly oily), fruits- artificial flavors- bananas and melons. On the palate is smoky, more fruit and green leaf flavors. Drying spicy note remains. The body is balanced. The finish is peat smoke with spicy edge.
Single Malts from Islay are considered to be the most powerful in aroma and flavor. Their strong peaty, briny character make them ideal malts for savoring.
Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs choice is famous amongst whisky connoisseurs, this brand offers unusual single malt whiskies.
